    A quote I ran across
"When someone you love dies, and you're not expecting it, you don't lose [them] all at once; you lose [them] in pieces over a long period of time- the way the mail stops coming, and [their] scent fades from the pillows and even from the clothes in [their] closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of [them] that are gone. Just when the day comes- when there's a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feeling that [they're] gone- forever- there comes another day, and another specifically missing part."

    Ray The Man
Ray passed away saturday morning at his home in the mountains. My mom was here with him. My sister called me as soon as it happened. It's what he wanted and things have been as smooth as they can be.

I've got the next week or so off work. I'll be up here with my mom doing what needs doing.

    I miss RTM. =( He's been my step-dad since I was 4.

    Jobs
Good lord, 25% of the year is already gone and I'm just now posting.. wtf?

Here's the skinny: My best friend got a cool job after his company got bought back in July. I got convinced to jump ship from my job and join him there. Only problem was: we both kinda do the same thing. That lasted about 3 months.

I picked up a consulting gig and started in November. I managed to get off on the wrong foot and have been digging out of a hole since mid January. Bascially, I believed it when I was told "an everage of 37 billable hours/wk is what you need to do". If you know anything about billable work (and I do now), that's closer to 10-12hr days when considering bay area traffic. I don't think anyone there has a personal life (other than the owners, who work 20hr weeks I think).

So yea, job hell and far too much stress. I've been sending out resume's like crazy. Even went so far as to ask for my old job back. I liked the cemetery. I took too much for granted there.

The flip side of all this is that Amber and I are doing fantastically well. I spend all my free time with her. There aren't words that can express the amount of awesome she is. I just tried like 3 times. Seemed inadequate, so I'll leave it at that.

    Quick recap:

    Job = Suckage +10
    Amber = Awesome +1000

Overall: I'm coming out ahead. =)

    Southern food
    Two words: deep fried.

We went out to dinner with Amber's mom,step-dad,sister+husband and Amber's friend Alexis. I had country-fried steak with fried okra and fried green tomatoes. Hushpuppies are hella yummy (like a fried bread thingy).

I thought fried green tomatoes were just the name of a movie...

That, and there really is a 'Piggly Wiggly' (think 'driving ms. daisy'). We bought a 13-lb turkey there to deep fry (naturally deep-fried) for xmas.

Note to self: get my blood pressure checked when I get home.

so, now I'm going to figure out how I can share my broadband connection via wireless with ambers mac. should keep me occupied.... and be a handy trick to know in the future.

Today is the day!! Honestly, I'm still traumatized from 2004. I really do hope we manage to get it right this time.

Speaking of voting, RSVP for my mom's 60th party if you haven't already.

    an update
    Life is good.

Amber and I have been inseparable since we met. Hardly a day goes by I don't see her.. in fact, I don't think a day *has* gone by that I haven't seen her since she got back from vacation 2 months ago. =)

My PS3 was broken: sent out for repairs via warranty and was just returned. seems to work great other than my save-game data won't restore from backup =(. the rock-band "endless setlist" is not something I want to repeat. Once is enough, thankyouverymuch.

Chimney sweep came out yesterday and cleaned/checked my chimney. I decided that the insert needed to come out, so he helped me remove all the hardware from the fireplace. Nice guy, so I tipped well. I did find out that the flue tiles are cracked. The chimney has to be torn down & replaced, or a fireplace insert installed. Meh. 5K to 15K.

Furnace still dead. Estimates range from $3.5K to $6K. Meh

Looks like electric heating this winter.

I'm not too upset over it though. It all seems insignificant next to having Amber around, so I'm happy =)

    Ack! crisis
The central air fan in my house has seized-up. Hence, no heater or circulation until I get someone to fix it, but the appointment will mean missing work. Anyone able to house-sit on thursday morning between 8am and 12pm?

Issues with the car: It's an electrical issue (and not one easily found.. like a fuse or visable loose wire). The first clue was about 2 months ago: the clock wasn't keeping time and reset everytime I opened the door. The dome light and radio stopped working. About a week or so ago, the headlight seemed to intermittantly go out. Amber and I worked out a plan to get it in the shop next monday.... but as luck would have it, last night after work: it failed to start. starter worked fine, but no fuel to the engine (fuel gauge was also buried max empty, which was incorrect). Amber came to the rescue. The car was towed to the shop. Estimate for repairs expected today.

To top it off: This morning, I roll into work to find out we had a crisis last night and didn't get the alerts because my work cell was dead (that's a whole other issue). Regardless, it was crisis mode this morning and my boss was being obnoxious.

    Amber
I didn't expect anything like this to happen. Lightning has struck.

She is such a beautiful person in so many ways. She's kind, considerate, giving, respectful, independent, honest, strong, loving, incredibly smart, a loyal friend... the list goes on. She's an incredible woman.

We talk all the time. Communication is definately not an issue. I love spending time with her. There's so much to her that I could spend a lifetime getting to know her, and still not have the whole picture.

She's become a significant part of my life in such a short time. My head is spinning. It's only been a month but we've gotten really close.

Fortune has smiled upon me. I'm a very lucky guy.

    I have chosen!
I'm in the market for a new vehicle. Primary considerations being work/commute, leisure, gas milage and hauling.

    My options are/were:

    - Luxury car (BMW M or Z series, maybe 3 series)
ad: comfort, coolness, women dig a nice car.
disad: expensive, poor gas milage, can't haul stuff

    - Commute car (used Prius w/carpool sticker, or newer hybrid)
    ad: comfort, great gas milage
disad: can't haul stuff, not as cool as luxury car.

    - Motorcycle
ad: fun to ride, women dig a guy who rides, great gas milage, free bridge toll and carpool lane
disad: uncomfortable in bad weather, can't haul stuff, family would disown me, not as safe as car

    - Pickup (4x4?)
    ad: can haul stuff
    disad: poor gas milage

I've been agonizing over this for weeks. Whatever I get, I'm stuck with for a long time. Then it hit me:

Hauling means: going camping, working on the house (dump, getting materials), tossing my bike in the back and finding a place to cycle. That seals the deal! I'm gonna get a pickup. I miss my old truck =(

My current '92 nissan sentra is going ok (electrical issue makes the radio/interior light/clock all not work). It's paid for and gets great gas milage (35mpg+). I can dump $200/mo into it and still be cheaper than a new hybrid.

I still want a luxury car. really bad.

    Input?

    Motorcycles
I have need of some knowledge and experience:

I live in Vallejo, and work in Colma. I'm thinking about commuting via motorcycle instead of driving. Any suggestions or tips? Perhaps a good place for me to do some research?

    Keep in mind:

    1. I've never ridden a motorcycle before. (What's needed? Courses to take?, etc..)
    2. I'd need to get one. (What kind? first-time rider)

$4/gallon + bridge toll = $440/mo in communting costs for me. It's getting insane. I'd rather put that to a motorcycle payment.
